My Summer at DG!

I'm Lyn, and my summer is jam-packed! I’m working here at DG as an assistant to Catherine, our founding editor and publisher, and let me tell you: Our office is busy, busy, busy!
This is actually my second summer at DG. I had such a blast last year that I jumped at the chance to spend another summer at my favorite magazine. Here’s a taste of what I did today…
9 a.m. Kentucky Discovery Girl Profiles
Even though it’s the middle of summer, we’re already working on the October/November issue. I’ve been calling all the Kentucky Discovery Girls to get their “Meet the Discovery Girls” quotes for the magazine. This is so not an easy task! Every girl is crazy busy, and it’s been difficult tracking all of them down. But when I do get them on the phone, it’s awesome finding out all about their hobbies, dream jobs, fashion sense, and even favorite ice cream flavors. I just got an e-mail from Mystee—she’s in a rock band. She even sent pics of her band in action! (Do you want the chance to be a Discovery Girl? Fill out the DG questionnaire!)
11 a.m. Mail, Mail, Mail!
Reading letters from readers always puts me in a good mood. My favorite letter today was from 11-year-old Ashley from Virginia. She writes, “I play basketball with my brother just to get pumped.” How cool is that?! She totally reminds me of how I was such a tomboy as a kid!
12 p.m. Lunch Break!
All that work can make a girl hungry! Time for some chicken noodle soup!
1 p.m. Gadget Overload!
In the October/November issue, we’ll be featuring all the must-have gadgets for girls. That means there are so many cool new gadgets in the office. We’re testing different products to see which ones are the absolute coolest. So far, we’ve gotten gel pens that write on metal, a robotic panda, MP3 players, and tons more! Laura just opened up an electronic MASH game that is supposed to predict the future. It says I’ll live in a New York City mansion when I grow up—but that I’ll drive a tractor! (I hope that second part isn’t right…)
2 p.m. Indiana Behind the Scenes
Okay, back to work! At DG photo shoots, we take hundreds and hundreds of pictures. The best part? All the fun is caught on film! I edited all the “backstage” video footage from the Indiana shoot to post on this web site (you’ll see my video posted in a week or so!). I didn’t go to that photo shoot, so it was awesome to see all the girls interviewing each other for the camera, letting their personalities shine!
3 p.m. Writing!
I’m working on articles now. What am I writing about? You’ll have to read future issues to find out! (I’m not giving away all my secrets!) Just so you know: I do get all of my article ideas from reader mail, so keep your letters coming!
Well, I just clicked “Save” on those articles, and now I’m writing this blog. Laura’s begging me to take the quizzes with her from the new Girls’ Survival Guide 2007. (I’ll tell you how I scored later!) But first, I want to know what you love about the Survival Guide, and what you want to know about me, too. I can’t wait to read all your comments!

I’ll let you other girls in on a little secret: When DG comes to your state, make your questionnaire stand out! I mean, my desk has stacks and stacks of questionnaires, so you want to find a way to make yours POP! We’ve gotten scrapbooks, powerpoints, colored paper (just about everything). But I know you’ll surprise me with something creative and different!!!…..

More Tips!
I’m glad you asked! Well, I’ll start out by giving you some tips on how to include the PERFECT pictures with your questionnaire:
1) Make sure it’s clear! We should be able to see your entire face (not just the back of your head)!
2) Let it express your personality! For example, if you’re the class clown, send in a pic of you wearing your craziest outfit! If you love to play ice hockey, send in a pic of you in action on the rink! Make sure you also add a picture where we can see your face, though. It’s hard to tell what you look like if you’re sprinting down the ice with a helmet on!
3) SMILE! A happy face just looks so much more exciting, don’t you think?!
MOST OF ALL: Don’t forget to include at least one picture!!!!!

Any other tips?
Quick Tips
1: Make your questionnaire neat. What I mean by that is, use a nice, clean sheet of paper and print or type neatly. Don’t fold it a million times either! Sometimes, I open an envelope, and it’s like a puzzle trying to unfold the papers! Also, don’t leave your completed questionnaire out on the dinner table or on the floor (or somewhere where it can get damaged). I can’t even begin to tell you how many papers have been torn in half or smudged with chocolate! That’s not good.
2: Don’t forget your city, state or province, and zip code! They’re part of your address too! So if you just said 12345 Main Street, we would have no idea where that is. What state is it? What city? Heck, what country? There are a gazillion Main Streets!!!
Jeez, I’m running out of tips! Just make them great, no AWESOME! You’ll know when it’s perfect.
