"I'm a DG Intern!"

Hey, girls! My name is Laura and I have the dream summer job: I’m an intern at Discovery Girls!
I’ve been here for about two weeks and I’m having the time of my life! Sure, I was nervous at first. I mean, I’d be working at a national magazine! And the night before, I was even a bit worried. (What if no one liked me? I wanted to make a good impression!) But after I arrived, met the amazing staff, and got my first assignments, I just knew DG was beyond a perfect fit for me!
How did my first day go? Well, to give you a sense of how I felt, you should know that I subscribed to DG when I was your age! I’d always run out to the mailbox, just hoping DG was in there. I think I loved DG so much because it always seemed that real girls (like you!) helped to create it! After just one day as an intern, I found out that it really is true! The Discovery Girls and readers really do help to create most of each issue!
I’ve also realized that running a magazine is hard work! There are the six issues each year plus DG’s special projects, like the newest Girls’ Survival Guide 2007 (and the bonus Style Guide), not to mention the upcoming book series, and the DG web site! “Busy” doesn’t even begin to describe the inside of this office! (But don’t get me wrong—it’s also really, really fun!)
The biggest shocker? All the mail! I counted every letter that came in the door today and there were close to 100 from girls like you! Just because we get a lot doesn’t mean we don’t read them all! We do—and it takes hours, days, even weeks, to get through everything. And then, before you know it, there are another 100 new letters in our mailbox! (Keep that mail coming, girls! We want to know what you love about the Girls’ Survival Guide 2007 and the June/July issue!)

Hey there, it’s Laura! How did I get picked? Well, I applied for the job through my high school and DG picked me from a bunch of other applicants. (I don’t even know how many!). I was sooo excited when I found out I got the job! The inside of the office is actually pretty small; there is a graphics department and a common room where me and two other people have desks. Then there are two offices, one of which is Catherine’s! The inside of the office even has fuchsia walls! Keep the comments coming, girls! I love reading them and answering your questions!

Good question! An intern is someone that is usually still in school and is hired by a company to work there temporarily. Like, for me, I am just here for the summer (and then school starts :(). An internship is a great way to earn experience in whatever you want to do in the future! <3

Seeing the hottest fashions, the humiliating embarrassing moments(including mine, lol) ask ali and everything else just makes a magazine just 4 girls. Hey! It was my favorite issue because inside, I remember there were quotes from girls about what they thought of September 11th and how it affected kids across the country. It brought girls together and I remember feeling that I wasn’t alone!

Well, I started getting DG
Well, I started getting DG the first year it came out in 2000 (I was ten years old). The magazine has come a long way but there are still a lot of things that haven’t changed. The old DGs had matters of the heart, creative corner, quizzes and worst days (just like we do now!). The main stuff that has changed is that now, we travel to states across the country to find our discovery girls, instead of just looking here (in California). It’s so much more fun that way! Hope that answered your question! <3

p.s. dg is my favorite mag and i like it soo much that when i get an issue i go to my room and read it back to front! : ) sometimes i get in trouble for not doing my chores though! : (

I’m glad your enjoying your new job but I was wondering if you could talk to the other staff members to see if you could start doing issus monthy????? I can wait a month for a magazine but waiting 2 months is forever!!!!!!!!! Also when you ask for people to do the ask Ali problems can you not need your e-mail address because my mom won’t let me put in there, even though I have a really good ask Ali question!!!

Dear Laura,How do u become an intern at a big magazine like DG? I’ve always wanted to work at a magazione even though i want to become a doctor. I just love fiilling out stuff like paperwork and having a desk and stuff, even if I don’t get paid or anything. I’m glad u could get this oppurtunity to get the experience. I always try to get the monthly magazines at the local bookstore, my dad said he would order a subscription for me. Can’t wait for your response!!-Gabbie

what do you get to do?
i would love to know if you get to help make BIG decisions like who goes on the cover, or which girls are chosen to be “discovery girls”. And if you get to write articles. I haven’t gone to the bookstore yet, but I’m going to go soon. SO i can get a collector’s edition. i love DG it’s awesome!
