Lose…or "Weight"?

Dear Ali,

I’m overweight, and lots of people tease me about it. I want to get thin so much, but how? I am scared I will end up with an eating disorder if I try to go on a diet.

Instead of focusing on losing weight, ask your parents, your doctor, or your school nurse to help you learn about smart food choices and reasonable portion sizes. And don’t forget to get moving, too—take up swimming, dance, soccer, or another sport that interests you, or just go for a walk with your mom or dad every evening after dinner. By making it your goal to develop healthier habits, not just lose weight, you’ll slim down slowly and without having to worry about eating disorders. Stick with it and you will see results—and stay healthy, too.

Stand up 4 ur self

If ur afraid to lose weight because of and eating disorder dont try to lose weight when You get made fun of say I dont care what you say cause you cant bring me down and walk away mean while have fun losing weight like riding your bike or dancing with your friends.

I have a problem just like yours. I’m not overweight, but I don’t eat enought good food. Most of the time I eat nachos, ice cream and chocolate bars. I’m trying to turn that around with healthy alternatives. You can try it, too. Instead of ice cream, I eat sherbert. It is like a yogurt ice cream, that is good for you. It comes in many flavours and they are all delicous. Instead of nachos, I eat apple and cheese slices, wich is good calcium and a great fruit is in there, too. I limit my self with chocolate to 1 chocolate bar every few days. See if you can think up other healthy alternatives so that you can still enjoy those fattening delicities! Remember, you can eat those delicities every once in a while, thats why they are called treats. So remember, stick with it and you’ll get good results!

You should’nt go on a diet unless a doctor tells you to. when you go through puberty your body changes it’s kinda creepy but get skinnier like I did.

“DIET” is not the word your looking for. Telling people about you “diet” makes you sound like you are going to make a change and do it no matter what (even if it means eating disorders). Think about your change as a well change! Think about the foods you eat not some crazy miracle plan!

It’s not nessarcily a diet it’s just making healthier choices. Besides, she didn’t even say how old she is! Besides, is there really an age limit when it comes to getting healthy?!

I can REALLY REALLY relate

I can SOOOOOO relate. I’m extreamly over weight- I mean I WAS over weight until I went to what some people refer as a ” fat camp.” But in that time I lost 8 pounds in just 2 weeks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Some people think about that camp as a ” diet”. I don’t think of it as a diet. I think of it as a “lifestyle change.” So, if there are no other soulutions for you try going to a weight lose camp. Trust me, it’s life changing.

Aren’t you sick of comparing yourself to those skinny girls?? I know that I am. Two of my good friends are super small and super skinny and whenever I’m around them I feel huge and like I have no confidence. I’m not over wieght but I just need to eat healthier foods. Just start off with some blueberries or carrots and when you’re going to the pantry for a snack just ask yourself “Am I really hungry?”

When I was 8 years old I was fat and everyone teased me too. When you say it like that it sounds sooo easy to say I don’t care. but it’s not. You can’t stand up for yourself or tell the teacher cause they’ll nickname you for life!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! and it’s not easy being fat once you go through puberty you somehow get thinner. And now I’m 11 and I’m sooooo Skinny that my whole family’s worried about me. They think I have an eating disorder but I don’t . I guess when you grow up your body changes and thats completely normal.

I disagree with some of what you said. If someone is teasing you, you have every right in the world to stand up for yourself as long as you do it the right way. ANd if it is really bad, it is the right thing to do to tell a teacher or another adult you trust. Teasing is bad, and a person should be able to do something about it.

dont lose wheight beacause people tease u ,lose wheight beacause u want 2 and ur not going 2 go on an eating disorder if u eat less sweats and then gradually get down 2 maybe 4 a week and u exercise u will lose wheight because ur burning more calaries than u take in and in the meanwhile u will still have sweats just not as many.

Not to be rude or anything, but I don’t agree with you. You are right in the fact that she should stand up for herself, but if she doesn’t lose weight and keeps on eating junk food, than she can still end up with an eating disorder. She could also become really overweight.

If you want to lose weight, just exercise and eat healthy. You won’t end up with an eating disorder, you’ll just want to eat right. Not too mush bread, sugar, or fat. I’m trying to lose weight, too. I’ve eaten really healthy, with a little unhealthy snack every few weeks. I’ve also exercised alot, and it’s really working. Just about two months ago, I was a size 14-15. Now, I’m a size 9-10! It’s really great. I just bought a pair of 9-10 jeans about two weeks ago at Aeropostal, and already they’re starting to get bigger on me. Just eat right and exercise EVERY day, and you can do it! If I can, trust me, you can, too.

Try to tell your parents.

Try to tell your parents. Then they can talk to your doctor and find out what you should do. Until then, just keep doing what you are doing, eating what you are eating and just brush off the teasing.

No diet

Diets are not good for kids, instead, eat healthier food and excirsize every day for 15 to 20 minuets. There’s cheap excirsizing vedio’s at the store, or you could go in your room and do like crunches, push-ups, knee bends, running in place and more fun things! And ingnor the kids at school!

If people make fun of you then they are not the kind of people you should hang-out with. Pray to God and ask for help. God loves YOU just the way you are. And you could talk to your parents or teacher or someone that you can really TRUST!!! You are beautiful to God and that is really all that matters!!!! Lose or weight?

I think you’re fine. If the girls in your class make fun of you just say…”well it’s not like you’re perfect either”. Every girl is different. If you want to lose weight get a group of girls over the weekend and go for a walk. Do it regularly. You’ll be fine, ignore those girls it’s none of their business

Some people are chubby but no matter how they try, it’s thier body type. Just eat right and exercise, and if you still don’t lose weight, it’s your body type!

My body is bad…. Well i think it is. But my mom says that if i can run and play and have fun without feeling horrible or out of breath to a point were it hurts I am ok. Also if you want to go on a diet don’t cut ANY food totally out of your diet (it’s not healthy) just try not to eat as much of it. Another good tip is not to weigh yourself a lot. That never helps if you are not losing any weight, so just go by the way your clothes feel. If all your clothes are too big than go ahead and try the scale but i think that it is a good way to just feel worse about yourself if it is not going too well. Hope this tips help-Audrey

i am over weight to. i will go out with my friends to a pool and wear a bikini and my friends who are also bigger but not as heavy all kinda laugh but i am not worried bout me body any more i go to my local gym 4 classes 1ce a week for 1 hour and after the first month and am seing results try that and see what happens

My friend is in the same boat!

My friend, Emily, is a little overweight as well. No one teases her about it. But all of her friends (including me) love her for who she is because she’s a great friend and she’s so funny. No one even notices that she’s over weight!

Be comfortable with yourself

There’s a girl at my school that teases people, and calls them names all the time. There’s always going to be people that tease you, and make fun of you for many different reasons. If you’re comfortable with who you are that’s all you need. Besides its what’s on the inside that counts. If someone won’t go past another’s apperance, they are missing out on a good friend then.

I bet it isn’t as bad as you think! I have a friend who is only slightly chubby, and she makes a really big deal about it. Eventually, my friend and I who like hanging out with her a lot took her aside and showed her the mistake she’d made. So don’t worry; your BFFs will stick with you no matter what and no matter how intense the teasing! Hang in there & GOOD LUCK!! :)

Weight Worries? Here's a Solution!

I used to be worried about my weight but now I’ve found that when I eat healthy foods, I feel so much better. Now I choose fruit over cake for dessert and it suits my body so much better. Being healthy is a choice everyone should make because it is VERY important.

If you don’t have a sport that interests you, (I don’t) then if you happen to have a dog who likes to run, then you could go for a walk with him every night. By the way, you don’t have to comepletely stop eating to lose weight. If you stick to smaller portoins of the things that you eat, then you don’t have to worry about an eating disorder. Good Luck!

Well we’re all different shapes and sizes. Im not that skinny myself. Just eat healthier and things will get better. The people who say things to you say if you dont like the way I look then dont look at me!!!! You shouldn’t live to please other people.

I share your problem!

I’m NOT AT ALL skinny, and these guys make fun of me. But, you have to learn to ignore it. Just try to restrain yourself from getting upset and not say anything, and soon, people that are picking on you will think it doesn’t bother you and will stop! ♥♥

Don’t worry. People in my school tease me too, because I’m sorta overweight. The main thing is that people who tease are there and they will get tired of teasing you. In the mean time, you also have people that care about you. All you have to do is just be proud of who you are! Just be happy.

Help with losing weight

I am pretty skinny but the only reason I am is because I get into lots of different sports and activities, otherwise I eat a lot! So if I were you I’d just get active and eat mostly healthy foods ( it is ok to eat other foods once and a while just not all the time.)

I am chubby too. I am losing weight now, though. All you have to do is eat less(dont be eating 24/7) and what you do eat try to make it healthy for you. Dont eat a lot of junk food. Its Okay... EVERYONE FEELS LIKE THAT!!!!

Well… i know that feeling that way can be a hard situation but remember… the people who tease you about your weight and stuff are just not very confident with how they look. Everyone has some kind of issue that they have with themselves and obviously they have to handle their own problem in an immature way. About the dieting idea… i would have to say that there is NOTHING wrong with eating healthy and exercising… of course unless you go overboard and do it the wrong way. Make sure your parents or who ever watches you knows that you want to o this… and who knows… maybe they will want to do it with you!! it makes it a lot easier if you eat healthy as a family. what ever you do you have to be happy with yourself. if you don’t respect yourself nobody will.

If you want to lose weight than i guess no one can stop you but make sure its what you really WANT to do and nobody’s forcing you also don’t go on a diet just eat right and stay fit [diets can be dangerous]. I used to have this problem too

I used to get teased a lot for being overweight too. I have since grown taller and slimmed down but remember that your true friends will like you and not make fun of you no matter what you weigh and those who do make fun of you now will still be jerks even if you do lose weight…they might find something else to make fun of so it’s best to try to ignore them the best you can. Just remember you are not alone…everyone gets teased for something or other.

nobody’s perfect! i have a friend who is a little overwieght but she is secure with herself. and instead of thinking “well no more mcdonalds for me!” eat healthy and work out that makes your body healthy! also do things in moderation one day have half of your cookie than the next day you can have the other half! hope my advice helped!

Try to lose weight

Try getting involved in dance, soccer, swimming, basketball, etc. If you get your body moving regularly you’ll feel better and your body will too. Try not eating tons of junk food and ice cream. Instead of going for ice cream try yogurt. Instead of Soda try Fruit Juice. And don’t try to go on one of those scary diets where you barely eat anything. You can actually starve to death

Been there

When i was 12, i was a little over 130 pounds. For me at the time, it was overweight. I went on a diet were i simply tried to eat as little as possible to the point were i would sit on my bed battling hunger. DON”T GO THERE! If my parents hadn’t realized somthing was up, my obsession with being thin would have led to anorexia. Instead, eat less junk food and more fruits and vegetables, drink milk or water instead of soda, and exercise regularly. And most importantly, know that your appearance is a small part of who you are. Your true friends don’t care what you look like!

Whenever a person teases you about your weight, you should ignore them and then tell an adult that you trust to give good advice. About going on a diet? If this is something you really want to do, you should see a doctor first. He or she will tell you if this is the right decision.

I was overweight

I was overweight for a while but then I just stopped eating junk foods a focused on the healthy ones and now I’m not super skinny but I feel more normal.

You can’t JUST loose weight by eating healthy, you have to exercise too! I lost 10 pounds by not eating past 8:00, that meant no desserts. It’s o.k. if you have a dessert once-in-a-while,but try to get into a sport. I play soccer 4-6 days a week. That made the scale go down. So listen tomy advice and pass it on to others!

i am not overweight. just the top have of my legs are. i try eating healthy and do more excersize.i already do soccer 3 days a week and swimmming lessons for 4 weeks. i will try the 8:00 thing. also the bottom half of my legs have bruises (tomboy) and it makes it look like guy legs. Don't be afraid!

Losing weight isn’t that hard when you’re determined. Don’t be afraid to get out there. As long as you play it safe and slow, you won’t get an eating disorder. Losing weight takes time and if you push it, things may go really wrong. Try eating healthier foods and getting atleast an hour of activity a day. Getting into habits will make it easier. By eating healthier and becoming more active, not only will you lose weight, you will feel better about yourself and be healthier. Try going on walks with some friends or family members. If they don’t want to do it, take your dog on a nice walk! He or she will love getting some one on one time with you. It makes it a whole lot easier (and a lot more fun too!) if you have a friend doing it with you. Going on walks in the morning or after supper is the perfect time to go walking. Don’t weigh yourself on the scale a bunch. Doing that makes it harder to lose weight most of the time. Instead of getting on that scale, go outside and play with a friend! Go swimming, ride bikes, jumprope,play tag. There are so many fun things you can do that’ll keep you in shape! Make this a fun experience! Good luck! I hope I helped!

Watch when you eat!

Make sure that when you are eating, you’re eating because you’re hungry, not because you’re bored and you have nothing else to do. Replace junk foods with healthier foods and make sure you get plenty of excersise. Only eat until you aren’t hungry anymore, not full. And after eating a good portiioned amount, wait 20 minutes before eating more. Waiting 20 minutes lets the food start to sink in so you know if you’re still hungry. Don’t eat anything past 8:00. Studies show that people who eat midnight or latenight snacks end up weighing more. Don’t push yourself in excersise. Do what you know you can do and gradually move up. Pushing youself can lead to problems. Good luck!

Your not alone

Dont worry about being overweight, cause a lot of girls are. And it doesnt matter what other people say about you (even thought it may hurt). Stand up for yourself! And dont worry, a lot of girls know how you feel (including me). So just be yourself, and be who you want to be.
