Frequently asked questions on becoming a Discovery Girl

We consider all of our readers “Discovery Girls”—girls who are curious, strong, and enthusiastic about becoming the very best they can be.  We also feature several girls in each issue of the magazine who are our Discovery Girls for that issue. In the past, we visited a different state for each issue and held a two-day photo shoot, during which our Discovery Girls from that state helped us put together the issue. In 2013, we started holding an annual Girls Leadership Summit. We invite 36 girls to come to California for a 3-day summit to learn leadership skills, discuss issues of importance to tween girls,  attend photo shoots, work with our editors to brainstorm ideas for the magazine—and have tons of fun!

That's right! You no longer have to wait until we're visiting your state to be considered—no matter where you live in the United States or Canada, you can apply! However, we only accept applications to our Girl's Leadership Summit for a few months each year—so be sure to watch the website for updates and announcements!

All girls who live in the United States and Canada who are between the ages of 8 and 12.

The Girl's Leadership Summit is usually held in the San Francisco Bay area. Details on the exact location are sent to the girls who are chosen to attend.

Unfortunately we are not able to contact all the girls who are not chosen, but we do post a notice on the Summit page when all the girls have been notified.

Editorial

There are many ways to contribute to DG. For all the details, go to the Contribute to DG Magazine page. Unfortunately Ali receives so many letters she isn't able to answer them all personally. She tries to choose letters for her column that will benefit many of our readers. If you have a serious problem or need advice immediately, you should ask an adult you trust for help.
We receive too many submissions to publish them all. For the greatest chance of seeing your work in the magazine, make sure it is your best effort and that the topic is one that is of interest to many girls.

Discovery Girls is published every other month, so you will receive six (6) issues per year. You can expect to receive your subscription issue 2 weeks prior to the issue date. For example, you will receive your October/November subscription issue in mid-September.

If you have seen the latest issue of Discovery Girls on the newsstand but have not yet received your copy, it's probably in the mail and will arrive shortly. Please wait until the 30th of the month prior to the current issue month (i.e., July 30th for the August/September issue) before reporting a problem. If more than 10 weeks have passed since you placed your order and you still have not received your first issue, please click here to notify customer service.

We will contact you well in advance of your subscription expiration date by mail so that you will not miss a single issue of Discovery Girls. If you think you have missed renewal notices because you have recently moved, be sure to send us your change of address. Renewal instructions must be received 6-8 weeks prior to subscription expiration to assure delivery without a break in service.
If you have received a bill after you paid for your subscription, the bill and your payment probably crossed in the mail. If you want to check your account status at any time to verify that we have received your payment or if you feel that there has been an error in processing your payment, click here. If your copy of Discovery Girls is damaged by postal delivery, please click here. We will send you a new copy.
All general inquiries regarding your account may be handled online: click here. Your magazine label contains valuable information about your subscription. To ensure that your magazine is delivered to you in the most efficient manner, please verify that your street number, street name, city, state, and zip code are correct. This allows the post office to assign the correct +4 zip code, which speeds the delivery of your magazine. To expedite customer service requests online, please provide your name and address exactly as it appears on your magazine's mailing label. Once your online account is established, you will be identified by your email address for future customer service requests. When contacting us via postal mail, please provide a copy of your magazine's mailing label with your correspondence. If you do not have a copy of your label, please write your name, address and postal code exactly as it appears on your label.

Digital Subscriptions

Please e-mail us at support@discoverygirls.com or contact us with your comments, insights, and suggested improvements. While we can't respond to every e-mail, we will be reading every comment and doing our best to address any concerns and ideas you have about our app.

If you have not yet downloaded the “Discovery Girls” app from the iTunes store, please do so. This is a free app available at in the the iTunes store. Unfortunately, some users have experienced problems with the app crashing. If this happens, you should be able to fix it by following these steps:

  1. Close all running apps. (Double-click the Home button, press and hold on the app icons in the bottom list until they start "shaking", then tap the "X" on each to close the app).
  2. Shut down the device. (Hold the Power key then slide the red bar when prompted).
  3. Turn the devise on again. The App should now work fine.

In your Library list, you'll see a button to the right of each issue that says Archive. Tap this button, and you will delete the issue from active storage on your device. At any time, You can always re-download those issues again later at no charge.

First, make sure you're signed in to the same account you purchased the issues with. If so, hit the "Missing Issues?" button on the upper right-hand corner of the Library tab. If this does not solve the problem, please contact us.

This happens occasionally when the iPad interrupts the processing of the issue. Typically restarting the app will resolve the issue. If not, you can always delete and re-install the app. You will never have to pay again for something you've already purchased, as long as you're on the same account.

On reinstall, you'll see a box asking if you wish to restore all purchases—press "Yes". If you miss that box, just tap "Missing Issues" in the Library list to get back access to all previously purchased issues and subscriptions.

You may access your purchased issues or subscription on all iOS devices: iPad, iPhone, iPod Touch running the “Discovery Girls” app if you're signed in with the same iTunes account. Just download the app, make sure you are signed into the same iTunes account you originally purchased the subscription with, and hit the "Missing Issues" button.

To cancel your subscription or get a refund please contact us. We can only issue refunds on iPad subscriptions purchased directly through “Discovery Girls”, not through Apple iTunes.

If you purchase a subscription through “Discovery Girls”, and are using the Apple iOS5 operating system, new issues will download automatically in the Apple Newsstand folder. You will be notified when a new issue is available. If you are on the older Apple iOS4 operating system, you will still get a notification from “Discovery Girls” about the new issue, but it is necessary for you to download new issues manually as they become available.

Press and hold your finger on the screen to bring up the "Store" button. Tap this to to access the in-app store, where you can subscribe to the magazine and buy single issues. Tap the price, confirm your purchase, and the issue will appear in your library. There you can tap the button to download it.

If the issues you've purchased are not listed in your Library, first make sure you're on the same iTunes account you originally purchased the issues with. If so, hit the "Missing Issues?" button in the upper right corner of the Library tab, which should restore your permissions to all issues you're entitled to. If that doesn't solve it, please contact us.

We do not yet have a procedure in place to accommodate this, but we are working on being able to accommodate such requests shortly.

If you have not yet downloaded the “Discovery Girls” app from the iTunes store, please do so. This is a free app available at in the the iTunes store. Do not purchase anything else from within the app, as your subscription is already paid for. The first time you open the app after downloading, look for the "Library" " tab on the top row navigation bar, then:

  1. Press "Sign In" or “My Account” (this varies by digital reader make sure the FAQ matches the app they have built).
  2. Enter the e-mail address and password you set up when you ordered your subscription and hit " Log In"
  3. Close the Sign-In window and press "Library" to see the issues you are currently entitled to receive. This will be the current issue when you first subscribe, then each subsequent issue on your subscription as it is published.
  4. Press the box with the issue you wish to read.

“Discovery Girls” Interactive Edition  is built specifically for the iPad, iPhone and iPod Touch devices. The entire issue is specially designed to bring our features to life on a digital screen for the first time. Since we are not restricted by the confines of paper and print, we can add extra interactive content. The NOOK, and Kindle versions of the magazine are PDF replicas of the print pages without any additional interactive features.

Just like the paper issue, you can explore “Discovery Girls” Interactive Edition page by page or by skipping around. Swipe across with one finger to turn one story at a time, or swipe with two fingers to quickly jump among sections. You can also just press and hold your finger on the screen or tap the upper right corner to bring up the contents list and the thumbnail preview at the bottom. From here you can simply tap to jump among sections. And you can bookmark a page by tapping the upper right corner of a page, and it will appear in the Bookmarks panel.
