DG Interns Say Farewell

DG Interns Say Farewell

Your DG summer interns Kendra, Olivia and Paige want to share a special farewell message with all of you!

Hey Discovery Girls!
As the school year is in full swing, I am now back in Los Angeles studying away. I am Natural Science major geared specifically towards going to graduate school to become a Physical or Occupational Therapist. My second year of college has been a blast so far and I can’t wait for the rest of the year!

Before I sign off, I just wanted to let you guys know that I had such a great time sharing with you this past summer and loved reading all of your mail and going through the Role Model Contest questionnaires. Always remember to be yourself, stay strong, and do what makes you happy :)

Hey girls!
It's been absolutely fantastic writing for you this summer. I loved getting all your wonderful comments and seeing what you had to say! What am I up to next? Well, as I write this, I'm sitting at my desk at UCLA. I'm a first year in college! I'm a bit scared since I'm away from my family and I don't know what the classes will be like. But I've already met such amazing people, and I know I'm going to be fine—I mean, I've gotten this far already, haven't I?

Hi Girls!
Thank you so much for reading the DG intern blog this summer! I have had so much fun sharing stories and tips with you and I have loved reading all of your comments and letters. My senior year of high school started about a month ago and now it is time to start focusing on my homework and college applications (high school is tough work!) I hope to get to talk to all of you again soon. Make sure to keep commenting on the different blogs and I'll make sure to keep reading your comments!

Thanks again for a great summer!

When I Was a Tween...

When I Was a Tween...

Okay, it wasn't that long ago that I was in middle school! I loved the Artemis Fowl series when I was a tween. (And I still do!) I probably identified with Artemis because I was always on the computer, and I hated sports! I wasn’t very good at singing, either, or acting… and I definitely wasn’t a super genius, but just like Artemis, I was able to find other, less conventional activities that I enjoyed. Whereas Artemis excelled in crime, I found that I loved to write and draw. Back then, I wanted to be a comic book artist. I was absolutely obsessed with Japanese manga and anime, and I was always drawing schoolgirls and supervillains in the margins of my notes—that much, at least, hasn’t changed! So although a young criminal mastermind might be an odd choice of role model, I have to thank Artemis for showing me that you don’t have to be popular or athletic in order to be confident! What about you, girls? Do you have a fictional role model?
When I Was a Tween...

When I Was a Tween...

When I was a tween I had the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to be a part of something that is now an international phenomenon for girls at this pivotal age. This special opportunity was to be in the first group of girls featured in what we have all come to know and love as Discovery Girls Magazine. When the magazine started, I was nine years old and in the fourth grade. I had been in a couple of classes with DG founder Catherine’s daughter, my friend Alexa (who is still my friend now!). Catherine asked me to be a part of her vision for this magazine. Looking back, I realize how amazing being a part of this was and still feel very honored to be able to say so! I was chosen as a Discovery Girl because I was just an average nine-year-old girl: I loved to sing, dance, play sports, play “teacher” with my mom, and hang out with my little brother. I loved my friends and loved doing whatever I could with them. Through interning at Discovery Girls and continuing to subscribe to the magazine, I have been able to keep that piece of tween a part of me and Discovery Girls will forever hold a special place of my heart. :) What are your favorite things about Discovery Girls?
When I was a Tween...

When I was a Tween...

- My favorite color was blue - All I wanted to do was sing and be in musicals and plays. - I read Discovery Girls Magazine! Each issue I would look at the Discovery Girls of each state and learn about them. They were like role models to me even though I didn't know them. - I absolutely loved to read. Some of my favorite books were The Giver by Lois Lowry and Holes by Louis Sachar. - My favorite movie was The Princess Diaries. Although many things have changed in the past five or six years, I have still kept some of my favorites from back then. I still love to watch some of my old favorite movies, reading is still one of my favorite things to do, and I have been in over 30 theater productions ranging from class plays to community theater shows with more than 100 kids. When I was your age, I had so many dreams of what I was going to do when I grew up and some of them have come true because I worked hard for them. My advice would be to never give up on what you love. If you really enjoy doing something, keep doing it. Everything you choose to do is a chance to learn something new. Leave a comment of either what you liked 5 or 6 years ago and/or what your dreams are for your future. I am excited to read what you all have to say!
A Kind of Magic

A Kind of Magic

I always find myself rereading books by Diana Wynne Jones. She’s been one of my favorite authors for years, and the fun, light-hearted whimsy of her fantasy worlds never fails to completely capture my imagination. If you’re still mourning the loss of the Harry Potter series (like Kendra!), pick up something by J.K. Rowling’s magical predecessor. You won’t be disappointed!
My personal favorite? Charmed Life, a novel about a boy called Cat who discovers that his nickname is more appropriate than he knows. Magic is as commonplace in his life as electricity is in ours. Cat starts the story feeling isolated and overshadowed, but ends up learning about himself and growing more confident in his abilities. So although his world may be super different from ours, his situation is something that we can all relate to, magical or not!
What have you girls been reading? I'm catching up with Percy Jackson and the Olympians!
