A Discovery Girls Holiday!

You read all about the Indiana Discovery Girls' New Year's Resolutions in the December/January issue of DG! Now, find out how the Discovery Girls will be spending the holidays!

Kasirha

KashiraOur family is Jewish so we celebrate Hanukkah. My favorite part of the holiday is lighting the menorah. Then the festivities begin! My mom makes special food for the evening: I especially enjoy the latkes (potato pancakes) and sufganiyot (special donuts). We give gifts on each night of Hanukkah. Last year my favorite gifts were a pen and pencil set and leather-bound journal. There is always lots of singing and dancing, especially when we have friends over!

Lindsey

LindseyEvery year my family 'adopts' a less-fortunate family for a little holiday help. The family sends us a present wish-list, and we get to work! Last year I went shopping with my mom for the 11-year-old girl, and I was shocked to see what was on her list! There were things like a new pair of pajamas, or a bottle of shampoo--things I take for granted everyday were her biggest wishes! The shopping is fun, but my favorite part is always giving the presents to the family. There is nothing more rewarding than handing the kids their presents, and watching their faces light up. I hope to continue this tradition with my children someday!

Holli

HolliMy favorite holiday tradition is when we put up the Christmas tree the day after Thanksgiving. It sounds silly, but if we don't do it then, we get so caught up in the holidays that we don't have time later! We play Christmas music and light cinnamon candles, pull sweaters and flannel pajamas out of the closet, and get ready for winter. My favorite part is when we finish decorating the tree and we sit, watch television, and drink hot chocolate.

Caroline

CarolineAt my grandparent’s house, each of my cousins, aunts, uncles, and I have our own bigger-than-my-head-big stocking with our names printed on them. After sharing presents, we receive our fully-packed stockings and just have fun! Then, my grandparents always hide a pickle ornament somewhere on their tree. After opening presents and getting our stockings, my cousins and I hunt for the pickle ornament . Whoever finds it gets money!

Shannon

ShannonFor Christmas Eve dinner, my mom lights candles and we talk about Christmases past. We live in a 1913 bungalow, and we always wonder what life was like for the children that grew up in our house back then. Did they have special dinners in the very same dining room?! After dinner, we make hot cocoa, sit under our tree, and read 'Twas the Night Before Christmas.

Alexis

AlexisMy family puts up our Christmas tree and decorates it the day after Thanksgiving. When it is all decorated, my dad lifts my sister and me up so we can both put the star on top. We bake delicious almond and lemon-spritz cookies with my Grammy, and my sister and I put way too much colored sugar on them! Finally, on Christmas Eve, we each open one present from under the tree, and then we all go ice-skating.

Sasha

SashaChristmas is great with all the decorations, presents, food, family, and friends. We bake everyone’s favorite cookies: chocolate chip, peanut butter, kalocki, Scottish shortbread and my favorite, Russian teacakes. When I was younger, I called them ‘rolly-polly cookies’ because we rolled them into little round balls.

Ashlyn

AshlinDuring the holidays, my grandparents, my mom, dad, brother and I delivery food and toys to kids and families who are less fortunate. Knowing I made someone’s day is amazing! It not only makes their Christmas better, but it makes my Christmas better, too!

Emily

EmilyMy grandmother lives in a small town in Northwest Indiana. On the day after Thanksgiving at her house, we get up early to go see Santa Clause arrive in helicopter. A firetruck then takes Santa to the courthouse where we go to deliver our Christmas lists. After seeing Santa arrive in town, we go out for doughnuts.

My Traditons

okay-well, I know Christmas is over, but I can’t get the holiday spirit out of me. This New Year’s, my grammy’s dog, Casey, was so scared of those loud blowy things that I had to spend the whole night comforting him!

HOlidayS down under

HI EVERYONE !!!! I’m writing this from aussie were its really hot AND we do everything 7 hours before you ! on christmas day my family and I go to the beach for a swim then we normally have a early dinner/lunch at 4:00 then we swim again then have lots of ice cream and Pavlova (kinda like a cake but really creamy!) then some beach soccer / cricket is played with all the family then everyone in the whole town plays with their new boogie boards, balls, surf boards, kites, buckets and spades at the local beach ! So my Christmas is soo different to the U.S and Canada’s but what matters is being happy about jesus being born :) jEsS (from the land of Oz)

Christmas Season-Here I Come!

On the day after Thanksgiving my mom, dad, and I put up the Christmas tree and decorate with our ornaments that we’ve collected over the years. The next day, we go outside to put up decorations. We have lights and penguin inflatables. On Christmas Eve, my parents sneek a present into my room at the foot of my bed. I wake up early to open my present. I play with that present until 7:30 when I’m allowed to wake up my parents. We go down and open presents. Then, my grandparents come over around 1. Christmas is my favorite time of year!

EVERY YEAR FOR THE HOLIDAYS EVERY PRESENT MY FAMILY GETS IS ANOTHER STUFFED ANIMAL GOING TO CHARITY. THE LAST COUPLE YEARS WE COLLECTED A LOT OF STUFFED ANIMALS AND THE HOLIDAY SEASON IS A GREAT TIME TO NOT ONLY RECIEVE PRESENTS BUT TO GIVE PRESENTS. MY BIRTHDAY IS OVER THE HOLIDAYS SO I GIVE OUT DOUBLE THE STUFFED ANIMALS. THIS MAKES ME FEEL LIKE I CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE IN THE WORLD.

Christmas Tradition

2 days after Christmas we get our tree and decorate it right after we get it. Then we decorate the house with lights and everything. A week before Christmas we go ice skating then go to this local Chocolate House cafe and get some warm hot coco and eat candy canes. On the big night (eve) we have a feast then my little brother who is only 5, track Santa. He loves doing that and when he is in Texas he says come on time to go to bed and then in the morning we open prezzies! At night we have a Christmas dinner than open our last presents that our parents save and then sit by the fire. Have a happy new year everyone!

My Christmas

Since my grandparents own a Christmas Decor Factory, every year around Christmas, people come & decorate our house. On Christmas Eve, we go to mass late at night and afterward eat dinner. We kids try to convince the adults to open presents right away & we elves (children 15 & under) deliver all the presents. After we all open our gifts and stay up late.

tO Lindsey

I like the way you like helping other people in need. Sometimes I donate things to charity. It was also my idea for me to give away the hair I cut, to people with cancer, and it does feel good to give to someone else.

My Tradition on Christmas Eve

Half my family is Polish,so every Christmas Eve we celebrate Vigil, and we don’t eat any meat all day long. Then at night we go to church. When we come home we put out homemade shortbread cookies and milk for Santa. Also,we usually make a reindeer snack. This Christmas is was a clear night so me and my sister made a trail mix specialy for Roudolph, sice Santa wouldn’t need him.We mixed carrots, celery, and oats all together and put it in a little baggie.Every Christmas Eve we all open 1 present, usually from our Grandma or Auntie Linda. Then my family goes upstairs and we read “Twas The Night Before Christas” together. Then we go to bed and wait for Santa!

My family just started a new tradition this year…we go to the webster house in manchester Christmas Eve and deliver toys clothes, and food to the less fortunate. When handed those bags full of presents to the kids..and seeing the smile on their faces…it made me feel like the best person in the world!

This is my idea of Happy Holidays.......

I truly believe the holidays are a time 4 giving and thankfulness. When people think that way, they are trulysharing the joy and spirit of holiday season.Things arent as important as giving that spirited gift…a piece of love. This may sound cheesey, but its true. Happy Holiday Season,Everyone! Love, C.

A bit of both Christmases

My family is from Slovakia so our tradition is that on Christmas Eve, We have mushroom soup and then fish (Carp). Then my dad and I go upstairs and my mom dounstarirs and wait until “Baby Jesus” rings the doorbell as a sign that it’s ok to open the presents. After the doorbell rings, (I wounder who actualy rings it) we open presents. I always leave my Grandparents’ presents for Christmas day so that I have it a little non-Slovakian too. We also make turkey on Christmas Day for the same reason.

Traditions!

My family’s tradition is alot like Caroline’s: my mom and dad hide an ornament pickle on Christmas moring for my brothers and I to find. The gift for whoever finds the pickle is a present which is usually dvds or cds that are for the whole family. I usually find it though because my brothers are to busy looking at their stockings! -Madison
