Little MissMatched Blog Showcase

Blog Showcase: Little MissMatched Winning Apprentices!

Throughout the month of June, Little MissMatched had 130 Summer Apprentices working  as LittleMissMatched Bloggers!  What is a Summer Apprentice, you ask?  Summer Apprentices are aspiring poets, fashionistas, designers, athletes and intellectuals…and they are all girls aged 8-14 years old! Here at DG, we wanted to get in on the fun so we are showcasing eight of the winners right here!

The theme for the blogs? Vacations, Carnivals, Ice Cream Shops or Shows…Tell us About Your Traveling Toes.

And have they ever!  This past month, tweens wrote in as fashion journalists, food critics, entrepreneurs, poets, experience reviewers and more…all sharing about their traveling toes. You can read our eight winning entries here, and also head over to Little MissMatched’s site “Threads” to see their eight writers, too!

Congrats to all of the winners…and enjoy the blogs!

BEEKEEPING: It’s Really Sweet

By Olivia, age 8

In June, my class went to a bee farm.

We went into a field and collected gross bugs and pretty flowers.  I collected twelve different kinds of flowers.

Next, we went on a long hike to a cliff.  We sat and ate our lunches and enjoyed the view. On clear days, you can see to Massachusetts and Connecticut.

After lunch we went to the beehives; the beekeeper has five hives altogether.  We put on beekeeper suits and veils and went to a big hive that was swarming with bees.  We collected sticky honey and black wax.

We got to sample honey; it was sweet!

Here are some cool facts about bees.
  • Bees talk to each other through smell and by shaking their butts.
  • The beekeeper’s five hives make over 500 pounds of honey a year for the farmer to sell.  He has to keep 50 pounds for them to eat over the winter.
  • The worker bees feed the queen bee so much that she is too fat to fly.  If the colony wants to move out, they have to starve the queen for a week so she can fly.
I loved this trip!

DON'T FORGET YOUR FINGERS!

By Olivia, age 13

One of my favorite things to do is to paint my nails! There are hundreds of different colors to choose from. Some trendy colors are neon, matte, and muted or creamy looking colors. Shatter coat and funky nails are also trendy right now. Shatter and crackle coats are made by many different brands, and come in a variety of colors. You can make funky nails by painting all of your nails except your ring finger one color, and paint your ring finger a different color.

I love to paint my nails mismatched! Creating mismatched nails is simple. You just paint your nails all different colors and add different designs to each nail. In this picture, I painted my nails light pink with red hearts, sky blue with navy shatter, yellow with purple sparks, green with hot pink polka dots, and orange with white stripes. I love to use my favorite Little MissMatched socks as an inspiration! Be creative and have fun with your nails!

SLIP and SLIDE:  MY AMAZING RIDE

By Callin, age 11

I stood, shivering from fear, in a line that stretched down the Mayan Temple. The beautiful, Bahamian sun warmed my skin as I looked at the crystal clear water below me. Schools of fish and sharks swam around the two slides that cut through the pool. The sharks looked tiny, but I knew it was because I was standing 60 feet above them.

Minutes later, I was sitting on the Leap of Faith. I looked over my toes at the 95-degree drop. One deep breath later, I plummeted. I was diving through the misty pit. Water pounded my face as I whipped through the shark-infested tank. The water relaxed, and I felt a comforting pool of blue water on my body. It gently lapped my skin as I climbed out, in one piece.

My stomach dropped to my toes from the thrill of riding a 60-foot drop in four seconds. I was proud of myself for facing my fear, but decided that for the rest of my vacation I would focus on the eight other water rides and stunning beaches Atlantis had to offer!

Practice Makes Perfect

By Rebecca, age 11

I can do this!  I know I can!  Just a little longer and a few more sprints...."Humph! Humph!"  My hooves are pounding on the red dirt and gravel as my heart beats to the rhythm of each stride.  I need to quit running and get relaxed for the big race at Churchill Downs.  Can I really do this?

My favorite jockey, Henry, will be sad if I let him down.  I know I need to do the right thing and run.  Just RUN!  Yessss!  I'm finished!  I can smell a rose-covered blanket adorning my back in the middle of the winner's circle now.

"Wow!" Henry exclaimed.  "That was an amazing time, Great Oak!  One of your best!"

"Well, that's a relief!" Great Oak whinnied.  "I hope I don't have to train anymore today.  I'm horse-whipped!"

Henry got off with a congratulatory slap and said, "We'll start training again tomorrow.  Great practice run today!"

"Ah, horse radish!  You say that every single time, Henry!"  Great Oak snorted. “I'm ready to head back to the stalls to spend time with my buddies.  They might stirrup some trouble but I know how to harness some fun!”

Open Now!  Super Snow Cone!

By Kaitlyn, age 10

On June 5, 2011, Patty Blue, age 10, started a small business called Super Snow Cone.  Her inspiration for opening a snow cone business was that most kids run a lemonade stand and she wanted something that was unique like her. Now it’s a huge sensation…everybody wants one!

"Sometimes I wish I could take a break from it all, but it’s fun!” Patty said. “I’m having a hard time keeping blue raspberry in stock, maybe due to my last name!”
Patty said it was hard to get started because she had to buy a lot of ice and because she is using the new 4th generation turbo snow cone machine, which produces five snow cones per minute!

“The ice goes by in a snap!” said Violet, one of Patty’s helpers. “People everywhere are coming to get one because the weather has been so hot!”

Come to Super Snow Cone on Ramsdale in downtown Rockford next to Aunt Candy’s Toy Store.  In thanks to the town for their support, Patty is offering a coupon for 50% of your next snow cone!  Super Snow Cone is open Monday  through Saturday, 12:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. and Sunday 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.  Hurry, quick!

A SENSEible Summer

By Kate, age 13

I love helping children with disabilities, especially kids with autism. For three weeks I participate in a theater camp called SENSE that provides “a stage of hope” for autism. Autism is a disability that is usually developed by age 3 and affects the brain’s normal development of communication and social skills. The camp is a theater camp for twelve children with autism. I help with a child named Alan who has a mild form of autism. Alan can be obsessed with certain subjects and can get stressed from loud noises. He also is allergic to gluten and dairy, which is not uncommon for children with autism. I also help a girl named Sarah who gets frustrated very easily and has tantrums. She is harder to work with than Alan because she has more severe autism. Sarah gets frustrated when she doesn’t get what she wants or is being talked to too much. She sometimes tells me not to look at her.  Working with children with autism is a wonderful experience. I always feel really good when I help a child with a disability, especially autism, because I let them feel special.

NutMeg’s Tales

By Megan, age 12

“GIRLS, AGES 11-12 ON DECK!”  I think, This is it!  Up on the block!  Give it your all! “SWIMMERS, TAKE YOUR MARK…”  I listen for the horn, “BEEP”, lean back and push! We’re off…as I streamline dive into the water, it’s cool but not cold.  I dolphin kick and come up about a fourth of the way to the end of the lane.  The girl on my right is a yard ahead of me and the girl on my left I can’t see, so I just keep swimming left, right, left, right, breath…coming up on the wall…flip turn, push off and do a dolphin kick.  Now break the surface, no one on my left or my right, so just start kicking faster.  I see the blue line on the floor end and I know that I’m three strokes away from the finish. I can hear my extraordinary friends cheering.  My legs are shaking down to my toes, when my thrilled dad gives me my time, it’s four whole seconds faster than last time!  There were two heats, so I don’t know if I won or not.  But it’s not about placing, it’s about being a good sport.

TIME IN THE SUMMER WITH A SMOOTHIE AND A BOOK

By Gina, age 9

One sunny afternoon I went to the bookstore and bought a book I have wanted for a long time called Lemonade Wars. On the way home I noticed the sky was clear blue, there was not a cloud in the sky, and even though the air was warm, the cool breeze kept it from being too hot. It was the perfect kind of day to sit outside and read my book. When I got home I went outside, the air smelled of flowers and fresh-cut grass. I fluffed the pillows on the couch and sat down on the soft cushions... it was time to read!

After awhile, I was feeling thirsty for a cold drink. I decided to take a break and make my favorite smoothie.

To make my smoothie I used: one banana, six sweet strawberries, a hand- ful of plump blueberries, yogurt and ice. I put all of my ingredients into the blender and with a load roar of the blender, I had made the perfect, refreshing smoothie. I went back outside, to enjoy the weather, my favorite summertime drink and my new book.
Summer, smoothies and sensational summertime reading! What more could a girl ask for!

there is this girl i know who is such a great artist! instead of drawing on paper, she draws pictures on her nails. she has drawn a beach scene with palm trees and the ocean and all different kinds of animals. it’s so cool to see the little pictures on her nails. Olivia’s nails reminded me of hers!

It was only our first year competing so I think we did pretty well but there was a girl who was mad i got 1st in freestyle and she kicked me in the shin and in the knee!
