Ever wondered what it'd be like to audition for a Broadway musical? Well, this DG reader did just that! Read on to get a behind-the-scenes sneak peek at how Liana's day went when she auditioned for the Broadway hit, Annie!
My Annie Audition!
By Liana, age 9, New York
Wow! It had to rain on the morning of the audition, 57 degrees! Brrr! It was fun being part of the national search for “Annie” and I have loved theater since I was a toddler. I would use the coffee table as a stage, where I would sing and dance! My dad was happy to drive me to the audition. He says he is the chauffer! After an hour’s drive, we arrived to our destination the line was clear around the block…and around the block…and around the block again….totaling five New York City blocks! There were so many pretty girls everywhere. All that waiting was not easy!
We met up with Marissa and Meredith, some friends from New Jersey. We had plenty of time to chat! For five hours we took lots of pictures, w-a-i-t-i-n-g, sitting, smiling, with staff wearing Annie t-shirts.
My mom says she takes a lot of pictures so when I grow up I won’t be able to say I never did anything. We ate lunch in line and were even interviewed by a camera crew that was making a documentary about Annie. So cool!
Yay! We finally entered the building! There were three greeters who gave you a number. Yes, air conditioning! We were sent to a large gymnasium…to wait some more!
I was number 1069! My friends had higher numbers so I was first! Jitters! I was brave, though, and when it was my turn when I walked into the room. It was just me and a casting director. I remember trying to make eye contact. I stood tall and proud. I sang my best rendition of “Matchmaker.” I am confident that I did the best job I could. The casting director started singing the last couple of lines with me! my friends were there too!
“You will always be our star,” my parents said. Maybe a call back could happen in the future for me or one of my friends, just like the song “The Sun Will Come Out Tomorrow!” If I get a call back I am going to be singing “ I Think I’m Going to Like It Here” forever!
Dream On!!!!
Dream on!!! Don’t let anything crush your dream that is going to come true. Believe in yourself. Reach for the clouds. I know you can do it.dream!
