Ever wondered what it'd be like to audition for a Broadway musical? Well, this DG reader did just that! Read on to get a behind-the-scenes sneak peek at how Kara's day went when she auditioned for the Broadway hit, Annie!
A Day I'll Never Forget
By Kara, age 10, New Jersey
Recently I auditioned for Annie the musical in New York City. That day was crazy! It started out waking up at 6:30. I had to slurp down some cheerios and rush upstairs to put on the clothes I had laid out the night before. Then I had to brush my teeth and hop in the car at exactly 7:10.
I was in line to wait to audition at 8:15. My mom and I arrived at the parking garage at 8, but there was a little hike to the studio. The line was a quarter mile long! When I got in line I knew an immediate friendship had started. I met a girl my age named Devon who was super nice.
A half hour later Devon and her sister Delia went around the block to see how long the line was. They said another lap around the block was starting! So I decided to consider myself lucky with my spot.
Pretty soon one of Devon's friends came over to our spot in line. Her name was Dorothy. She was just as nice as Devon. We started chatting up a storm…another instant friendship!
Then Dorothy and her mom decided to go get some tea to warm up our voices. When they came back, the stuff was piping hot. It almost made me drop my cup! So at that moment I decided to pour in some honey. After that, the stuff wasn't that bad. It cleared everything out of my throat and my singing voice sounded unbelieveable!
We were now nearly 50 feet from the door! I couldn't believe it! I was so excited. Then a reporter from the New York Post newspaper stopped by and interviewed me and Dorothy. He even took our picture. As he left he said, "See you in the New York Post!" Then, finally, we were in.
When we were at the top of the steps, I had to hand in my headshot, resume, and permission slip. A nice lady gave me my number. It was 575. She directed my mom and me to the gym to wait to be called.
Man, was that gym crowded! There was a camera crew and there were girls getting interviewed. Each girl was handed a Discovery Girls magazine. I read mine for a while but then decided to start practicing. I was looking down at my music, but then I saw something right by my face. I kept singing and looked up…the camera crew was taping me! Two seconds later the gym had gone silent. All 1,400 eyes were on me. I was shocked, horrified! I couldn't disappoint my "fans,” so I kept singing into the camera. When I was finished, the whole gym applauded!
At around noon, I was called. I had to wait in a hallway right outside the audition room. There were a lot of good singers in these hallways, but I hoped I was the best. Finally, I got called into the audition room.
The lady inside took a look at my headshot and resume, and then asked me to sing my song. I think she really liked me. I noticed her smiling as I sang my song. I had such a good feeling about that. In my head, I was jumping around like a lunatic. I think I will get role, but I can't be 100% sure. Good luck to everyone who auditioned!
