Role Model Contest Update!
Thanks to all the great girls who entered our contest! We read each and every entry (there were thousands!) and we’re so grateful to you for all the work you put into them! We were inspired by all you’ve done, and we want you to know that we’re keeping your entries on file. (In fact, some of you may be hearing from us yet, as we find other ways to share your stories.) While it was incredibly difficult to choose only 30 finalists, we made the process as fair as we know how, basing our choices only on your accomplishments and personalities. We feel our finalists represent everything that Discovery Girls is about—confidence, enthusiasm, a "can-do" attitude, diversity, and a spirit of giving back to their communities.
Now it's your turn! Starting September 1 (that's Wednesday!), we need your help to narrow it down to 10 great role models. Please take the time to read through our finalists' blogs, look at their pictures, and watch their videos to help you decide who should get your vote. We know you'll make the right decision!
Never forget, each and every one of you is a role model to somebody!

Hey everyone, Just wanted to say thank you to all the people that voted for me this past month! Without all of your help, I would have never gotten into the top 10! To the 18 finalists who didn’t make it in, I am really sorry that you don’t get the chance to come to California. I also know that you should be proud of yourself, out of over 3000 entries you were chosen as part of the top 30, and all of you seam like great role models! To all the Canadian readers, I promise I will represent all of you as the only top 12 member from Canada and the first ever DG girl from Nova Scotia! Hi DG members! The reason I am voting for Erica, is because I know Erica very well, and I think she would make a GREAT role-model for DG. Erica was a 5th grader last year at my school, and I just know she would do an incrediable job at this! I think Erica should be in one of the top 10 girls. Hello Katie and hello discovery girls. This is a super website and I am going to get my daughter to check it out too. Katie! We read about you on the Hospital for Sick Children’s front page on the website and had to check you and we are voting for you everyday! You amaze me with all your fundraising for Sick Kids and you should be so proud of yourself and all you have done. WOW - raising over $21,000 in 3 years! Looks like a lot of work and we loved watching/listening to your picturestory to Mileys’ The Climb” Keep up the good work and we will come back and check out Discovery Girls too. That is really nice. I usually buy my magazine from Shopper’s Drug mart and this year as part of my birthday present, my Mom subscribed to DG for me…You should check it out! I just wanted to say that as a Mom of a tween and a teenager who reads your magazine I really love to take a moment and read each issue too. You really print up a great magazine and I enjoy seeing my daughters sit with their friends and read over and talk about all your articles. You give great advice. You must have had a interesting time sitting down and reading all the contest applications..that must have been a lot of fun and a lot of work. We have read all the finalist info and this family is voting for Katie from Ontario…(we just heard about being able to add to the blogs tonight online but all the girls seem to be really unique and a great group of finalists. So give yourself a big hand DG! You have done yourself proud with this contest. We cant wait to see the issue where all the girls will be featured. We will be waiting at the newspaper stands! In one of them you are lying in a bed at the hospital it looks like holding something … a frog? what are you doing? What is it like to have a heart problem? Thank you for voting for me. You asked me some questions. Mmm let me think about the picture you are talking about. Oh…yes you are right. I am balancing a frog on my finger in my hospital bed. I had woken up from my heart procedure and because I had 5 catheters in my body (1 feeding from my neck to my heart and the other 4 from my “legs”) I had to lie still for over 4 hours. Two ladies from Girl Guides who were visiting on my floor came to say hi and were showing me some neat tricks….including the frog. They were nice. What is it like to have a heart problem? It can be tough and tiring sometimes but it is part of who I am so I try to do my best. About the girl from your school…remember she is a person first so I suggest getting to know her…she is a girl first…then once you know her and you are not strangers anymore, you could maybe ask her if you could ask her a personal question. Noone wants to feel like they are just a disease or a curiosity. Get to know her and maybe the rest can follow. That is what I would do but remember everyone is different so just do your best and be careful about her feelings. My me…I dont mind when people ask. I think of it as educating them about hearts and how heart problem dont just apply to older people.Go Sadie!!

Thanks for thinking of me. This internet blogging, networking, etc is so strange and new for me. I am a bit puzzled and slow to get caught up on it (I have been living most of my life in Africa).
