Ask the Role Model Finalist Answers!

Last week, we asked you to send us questions for our Role Model finalists—and you came up with some some great ones! We selected three questions and gave them to the finalists to answer. We asked them: 1. If you could go anywhere in the world, where would it be and why? 2. How does it feel to be called a role model? 3. How can you work towards social justice in your lifetime? Be sure to check out their blogs (just click on each girl to see her "blog" tab), read their answers and get to know them better. Don't forget to keep voting for your favorite role model! You still have 10 days to vote! After you read their answers, tell us who's answer you like best and why! Oh, and let us know how you would answer the questions, too!

Katie from Ontario's questions-not posted

Discovery Girls Questions for Ask the Finalists! 1. If you could go anywhere in the world, where would it be and why? There are SO many places I would love to go and visit. I have never been on a plane. If I won the lottery I have a list of places I would love to visit, like Disney World and Ireland, see some relatives and take along some friends. That is nice to dream about. But to be honest? I love where I am right now, right here in North York (Toronto) Ontario, Canada. I have an amazing family that loves me and cares about me. (My Mom and Dad and 3 older brothers and their girlfriends, hover over my every move and sometimes annoying but really kind of special). I have amazing friends and I think my life is great although I might complain about cleaning & homework (once in a while). And yes…I have a rare life threatening heart condition. But at Sick Kids Hospital I have met many other kids who depend on Sick Kids to help them out every day. After my heart procedure, I remember lying down waiting to go for a echocardiogram after my heart biopsy and my Mom and I met a little 2 year old boy who had already had TWO heart transplants. I remember thinking “Wow! Quit your complaining Katie, you are doing ok” Since then I don’t think “why me?” Instead I think…”I am lucky I am a patient at Sick Kids! How can I help? What can I do to make a difference?” For the past 4 years I have spent lots of time at Sick Kids Hospital and yes, one day maybe, I will need a heart transplant but I am lucky to live where health care is free. So I fundraise and am on the Sick Kids Children’s Council and hopefully I get to keep on doing this for a long long time. So then the answer to your question “Where would I go?” - Nowhere! I am exactly where I want to be. Every day I am thankful for who and where I am and I thank my lucky stars that I get to continue to try my best and stick to my motto – “Live, love, laugh”. So where I am right now makes me really happy. I work hard to do my best and that is the best I can do. I have met new friends, amazing & interesting people and hopefully I have helped make someone else’s life just a little bit better and a little easier. That is where I want to be. Thank you for that question! 2. How does it feel to be called a role model? I think it is absolutely an honour to be called a role model. It feels kind of strange like people are really talking about someone else. It is kind of just what I do. I know that Sick Kids Hospital has helped me so much to be able to get back to sports and so I have decided to make it my responsibility to try to return the favour. So thank you DG for making everyone a little more aware. It is exciting to read all the DG finalist logs and to think of all the different possibilities out there. My Mom has always taught us that “Little Kids can help big too!” ever since I can remember. So that is what we try to do! Thank you SO MUCH for thinking of me as a role model. It feels funny but it also feels really nice too.  3. How can you work towards social justice in your lifetime? I have to admit that when I saw this question, I wasn’t too sure about what I thought it was. I know what social is and I know what justice is..but..? So I did what I always do when I am not too sure about something….I look it up! I think the best example of what social justice is I found during a google search. I have seen this quote before. (Called the famous Lao Tzu proverb) “Give a man a fish; you have fed him for today. Teach a man to fish; and you have fed him for a lifetime” That is a lot ot think about. So DG…The more I thought about it, the more I realized that if everyone needs to do their part to help with social justice. By doing one act of kindness at a time. Saying one compliment or each of us trying our best to help another. I hope I do my fair share and I will work to keep on trying to do my best and my part every day. (And try to spread the idea to as many friends and family as I can) Who knows what can happen? Picture one snowflake…small and delicate. But put a bunch of snowflakes together and they together become more powerful. Individually and together, we can all make a difference! So….what are we waiting for? Let’s get moving!  Katie!

Meh Answers...

I wanted to do the role model contest and I had everything filled out but then time passed and I never got to send it in sadly. Here are my answers to the questions! If I could go anywhere in the world I would probably go to the 3rd world countries and help the children learn things. I think it is cool to be called a role model and to know that people look up to you. I’m not exactly sure on what “social justice” is but I’m guessing that it means to stand up for yourself. If people are mean to me I just ignore them and move on with my life. If people are mean to other people I ask them if they would like it if I said that to them. ☺

I would also love to visit trannsylvania(where all vampires frankenstine etc. came from since im totaly into all that) I also want to go to Paris! I want to become a gourmet chef there and open up my own resturant!!! Question #2. A:Since I’m not a DG role model thats hard to say. IT would be so cool to be thought of as a role model Question #3. Im not exactly sure what it means by social justice but i’m guessing bullying and stuff like that? I guess by sticking up for girls and being pproud for who you are???
